Building upon our previous work, The Postcolonialist seeks new submissions for its next issue, “Postcolonial Apertures: Horizons of (De)Coloniality.” Recent years have seen critical changes occur across postcolonial regions, forcing new conceptualizations of historical accounts, national and cultural narratives, and media discourse, along with a (re)deployment and rejection of narrative tropes. Massive forced migrations, economic and climate changes, and the specter of political violence have given way to a discourse of crisis. As we unpack current debates, we invite pieces that work with and against the terms colonial, postcolonial, and decolonial, thus redrawing the contours of current debates on postcolonialism and its legacies. Creative work, photography/painting series, essays, and academic writing are encouraged, as we seek to explore the intersection of the arts, media, and academic endeavors.

The Postcolonialist is alternative and interactive avenue by which scholars, journalists, artists, and activists from around the world can collaborate and engage in dialogues of culture, power, and civil society in Postcolonial regions (encompassing the Americas, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Diasporic communities, and indeed the ex-métropoles). With a focus on multi-lingual and cross-regional work, The Postcolonialist endeavors to view the global South and its diaspora in concert. We seek to displace notions of “center” and “periphery,” instead showcasing the artistry, innovation, and critical production of postcolonial regions and peoples as constitutive of and central to a globally interconnected future.

The Postcolonialist welcomes contributions across disciplines and genres. While most contributions will be in English, submissions are welcome in French, Spanish, and Portuguese. Artwork, relevant interviews, and photography may also be welcome, though an initial proposal is typically submitted. Please include biographical information separately for peer reviewed academic submissions. Shorter pieces may be up to 1,500 words, while feature or scholarly articles may be up to 6,000 words. A short bio should be included with the submission. Areas of interest include but are not limited to: 1. Arts and society (includes literature and film); 2. Gender and political participation; 3. Education; 4. Immigration and diaspora; 5. Civil society and the international stage; 6. Media and the global South; 7. Citizenship and identity; 8. Language, multi-lingualism, and language hierarchies; 9. emerging markets.

Deadline: March 31, 2016. Please send all inquiries and submissions to: Lara N. Dotson-Renta, PhD Founder & Editor-in-Chief: editorinchief@postcolonialist.com www.postcolonialist.com.

The Spring/Summer 2015 issue of The Postcolonialist invites submissions that explore, analyze, challenge, and re-stage the complex power dynamics involved in determining “free speech,” “freedom of information,” and “radical speech,” and how these are being continuously redefined in the public sphere. We welcome pieces from across disciplines and critical traditions, and encourage interdisciplinary and intersectional approaches including but not limited to postcolonial studies, media studies, literary studies, critical race and ethnic studies, and gender studies.

For Peer Review: We welcome innovative pieces in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French between 5,000-7,500 words in length for the standard peer review process. Submissions in Italian will be considered on an individual basis. Academic Dispatch pieces may be between 1,500 and 3,500 words (“conference-length” papers). Full length articles should have an abstract and key words, and be anonymized for peer review. While we have no standard citation format, we ask that each paper adhere to the accepted citation model in the relevant field. Please do not send pdf document submissions that cannot be edited or commented on.

Editorial or Artistic pieces relating to the Spring/Summer 2015 theme are also welcome.

Inquiries and Submissions may be sent to: Editorinchief@postcolonialist.com by April 13, 2015.

The past decade has seen a wave of socio-political and economic changes across the globe. We are witnessing geopolitical conflict on a local as well as international scale, intensified by rising wealth disparities, mass migrations, crippling austerity measures, repression of dissent, and increasingly controlled borders. These events make evident the centrality of class to any discussion on the sweeping changes taking place in the global political landscape. Class, however, does not operate in isolation from other social structures, a fact that underscores the need for interdisciplinary research and intersectional discourse.

The year 2014 marks twenty-five years since Kimberlé Crenshaw coined the term “intersectionality” to describe how terms such as “class” or “race” may not be analyzed in isolation, but must be combined in order to understand the complexity of a particular praxis: “Because the intersectional experience is greater than the sum of racism and sexism, any analysis that does not take intersectionality into account cannot sufficiently address the particular manner in which Black women are subordinated.” While Crenshaw may have been speaking particularly of the lived experience of Black women and ‘mainstream’ feminism in the United States, the intersectional approach proposed by Crenshaw has been adopted by many disciplines and groups in order to analyze the junctures at which complex identities are contested and staged.

Twenty-five years on, we believe it is important to pay tribute to the ways in which intersectionality has become part of a range of disciplines, as well as to ask how it can be examined, critiqued, and pushed further. Therefore, in its Fall 2014 request for papers, “Intersectionality, Class and (De)Colonial Praxis,” The Postcolonialist would like to invite papers across disciplines, topics, and areas of study that delve into the state of intersectionality today, and the new ways and means in which it is being deployed and interrogated as an analytical tool and a theoretical framework.

For Peer Review: We welcome innovative pieces in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French between 5,000-7,500 words in length for the standard peer review process.
